This 38 filing cabinet drawers and 40 feet high tower was created by Bren Alvarez in 2002. It was designed as a monument to the failures of bureaucracy after 38 years of delays in the creation of the southern connector. Originally proposed in 1965, the southern connector is still unfinished today.

The Pit is exactly what it sounds like: A large pit in downtown Burlington. It’s the result of a CityPlace development project that’s been stalled time and time again, now infamous for being a forever unfinished mass of dirt. This failure of a downtown transformation project cost the city an estimated $200 million.
